Indian rapper Sofia Ashraf has released her new song—“Kodaikanal Won't”. Put to the beat of Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda, this song condemns the behaviour of a multinational corporation, which is accused of mercury contamination.
According Sofia Ashraf, Unilever dumped toxic mercury in Kodaikanal and failed to clean up the contamination and compensate its workers whose heath has been adversely affected by the act of the corporate.
Kodaikanal is a city in the hills of the Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Its name in the Tamil language means "The Gift of the Forest". Kodaikanal is referred to as the "Princess of Hill stations" and has a long history as a retreat and popular tourist destination.
Till now, nearly 20,000 people have signed the petition launched by social justice NGO Jhatkaa, which also posted Ashraf’s rap song, asserting that Unilever should “take responsibility”.
